Over 110 species ± equally divided between the New World, with centres of diversity in Peru and the SE U.S.A., and the Old World from the Cape Verde Islands to Iran with a centre of diversity in and around Turkey, only seven species penetrating into tropical Africa south to Chad, Ethiopia and Somalia plus one S American species also found in S Africa and Australia.
