Distribution
A genus of five species, throughout Malesia to Queensland and the Solomon Islands; with three species in New Guinea, two of which are endemic: Mackinlaya celebica (Harms) Philipson from the Philippines to New Guinea, and M. radiata Philipson which is very little collected and M. schlechteri (Harms) Philipson known from very distinct populations along the Central Range.

Ecology
Found in a variety of habitats including primary rain forest and montane forest as well as secondary growth, from sea level to c. 2500 m.
Recognition
The genus can be recognised by the sheathing petiole bases encircling the stem, leaves with a variable number of leaflets but often digitately compound with 1–5 leaflets with the terminal leaflet itself digitately lobed or compound, the flowers with clawed petals with reflexed tips, and the strongly compressed fruits.
