Small tree usually 8–15 m. high, but sometimes flowering as a shrub c. 3 m. high.

Leaves subcoriaceous, drying blackish–brown above, paler brown beneath; lamina up to 7 x 2·2 cm, very variable in shape; lower surface glabrous except for a few setulose hairs towards the base of the midrib; midrib prominent above, often impressed beneath; nerves almost or quite invisible.
