A glabrous or subglabrous plant mostly up to 1.4 m tall, with lower leaves bipinnate with lanceolate to ovate, dentate leaflets and main stem leaves usually simply pinnate

The cultivated forms of this well- known plant are legion, and vary from small double “button” capitula with a dwarfer habit to coarse plants with very large single or double capitula

Ray limbs are red in wild forms, but wide range of colours are available in cultivation.
