Description as for family.
Note
About 20 species, Mexico to tropical South America. Usually referred to the Polemoniaceae, but it bears little resemblance to that family. Airy Shaw (Willis, Dict. Fl. Pl. ed. 8: 265 (1973), kept the family Cobaeaceae separate. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group include Cobaea in the subfamily Cobaeoideae of Polemoniaceae together with several other disparate looking genera.
