Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Caribbean, Orinoquia, Pacific. Elevation range: 0–2100 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Amazonas, Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Caldas, Caquetá, Cesar, Chocó, Magdalena, Meta, Nariño, Putumayo, Santander, Sucre, Valle del Cauca.

Native to Mexico, Central America and Antilles, it was introduced many countries of tropical and subtropical America, Oceania and Asia.  In Africa, it is cultivated some gardens. in J. Scott s.n.
