Distribution
A genus of about 400 species from the temperate and tropical regions of Asia and Australia and a few in America. In New Guinea and the Solomon Islands around 45–65 species are recorded.

Ecology
Found growing in primary and secondary rain forest and along rivers in open vegetation; from sea level to 3250 m.
Recognition
Species of this genus can be recognised by having unisexual flowers borne on umbellate inflorescences (the short shoots of which can be quite long, up to 10 cm), 4-locular anthers and fruits with a cup at the base.
