Morphology General Habit
Succulent perennial to 40 cm high, with dense compact branching forming neat conical or rounded “cushions” to 1 m in diam.; roots fibrous
Morphology Branches
Branches 1–10 cm long, deeply 5-angled, c. 1.5 cm thick; angles shallowly toothed, with teeth 3–5 mm apart
Morphology General Spines
Spine-shields oblong triangular, 3–6 x 1.5–2.5 mm, the ridges (angles) hardening around them to form a pale grey margin along the angles usually enclosing the flowering eyes; spines 2–15 mm long, black; prickles absent or vestigial only on young growth
