Descriptions

Morphology General Habit
Perennial; caespitose. Culms erect; 50-100 cm long; 4 -noded. Culm-internodes distally glabrous. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blades curled; 10-20 cm long; 1 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough adaxially. Leaf-blade margins cartilaginous; scabrous.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence a panicle. Panicle open, or contracted; elliptic; interrupted; 10-20 cm long; with spikelets clustered towards branch tips. Panicle branches scabrous. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Spikelets
Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; subterete; 8-11 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus evident; 1 mm long; bearded; obtuse.
Fertile
Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; subterete; 8-11 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus evident; 1 mm long; bearded; obtuse.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Bracts Glume
Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 5.5-8 mm long; 0.7-0.8 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scaberulous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex emarginate, or obtuse; mucronate. Upper glume lanceolate; 8-11 mm long; 1-1.1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume apex emarginate, or truncate; mucronate.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Florets
Fertile lemma elliptic; subterete; 7-11 mm long; coriaceous; keeled; 3 -veined. Lemma midvein without distinctive roughness, or scaberulous. Lemma margins convolute; covering most of palea. Lemma apex acute; awned; 3 -awned. Principal lemma awn 3-branched; with 9-15 mm long limb; persistent. Lateral lemma awns 7-13 mm long; shorter than principal. Palea 0.1 length of lemma; without keels.

Morphology General Habit
Perennial, up to 1 m. high, densely caespitose.
Morphology Culms
Culms erect, simple or branched, terete or slightly compressed, glabrous or slightly scaberulous below the nodes, c. 4-noded; nodes glabrous.
Morphology Leaves Leaf sheaths
Leaf-sheaths tight, glabrous or scaberulous, the lower slightly compressed.
Morphology Leaves Ligules
Ligule a ciliolate rim; auricles barbate or slightly pubescent; collar minutely pubescent.
Morphology Leaves Leaf lamina
Leaf-laminae usually up to 20 cm., scarcely 1 mm. wide when expanded, coarse, involute or flat at the base, curling when old, scabrid or hirtellous above, glabrous or scaberulous beneath, with thickened scabrous margins.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Panicle up to 20 cm. long, erect, lax or contracted but much interrupted, with an angular or triquetrous scabrous axis; branches remote, naked in the lower part, scabrid.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Spikelets
Spikelets pallid or yellowish-green, sometimes tinged with purple, densely congested towards the ends of the branchlets.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Bracts Glume
Glumes unequal, lanceolate, 1-nerved; the inferior 5·5-8 mm. long, scaberulous on the keel, subobtuse or emarginate or slightly 2-fid, with very obtuse lateral lobes, mucronate from the sinus; the superior 8-11 mm. long, smooth, truncate at the apex and shortly awned or 2-lobed, with a mucro from the sinus.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Bracts Lemma
Lemma 7-11 mm. long, slightly compressed, smooth or scaberulous on the keel; callus 1 mm. long, subobtuse, densely barbate; beak or column absent; awns scabrous, subequal, the central 9-15 mm. long, the lateral ones 7-13 mm. long; articulation absent.
