Annual. Culms erect; 30-120 cm long. Lateral branches lacking. Ligule an eciliate membrane; obtuse. Leaf-blades 15-25 cm long; 5-10 mm wide.

Fertile lemma lanceolate; 20-35 mm long; coriaceous; much thinner above; without keel; 7 -veined. Lemma surface pilose. Lemma apex dentate; 2 -fid; awned; 3 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.5 way up back of lemma; geniculate; 40-60 mm long overall; with twisted column. Lateral lemma awns arising on apex of lobes; 10-15 mm long; shorter than principal. Palea keels ciliolate. Palea surface smooth, or scaberulous.
