Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short. Butt sheaths herbaceous, or coriaceous. Culms erect; 60-150 cm long. Lateral branches lacking. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 4-7 mm long; obtuse. Leaf-blades filiform, or linear; flat, or convolute; 20-45 cm long; 2.5-8 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scaberulous; rough on both sides. Leaf-blade apex attenuate.
