Morphology General Habit
Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; 90-350 cm long; 5-15 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; thin-walled; 10-20 cm long; smooth; distally glabrous. Lateral branches lacking, or sparse. Bud complement 1. Leaves 10-26 per branch. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode; smooth; glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs ciliate; curly and deciduous. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base broadly rounded, or cordate; with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.2-0.5 cm long. Leaf-blades deciduous at the ligule; lanceolate, or oblong, or ovate; 7-20 cm long; 20-40 mm wide; coriaceous; stiff. Leaf-blade midrib conspicuous. Leaf-blade venation without cross veins. Leaf-blade surface smooth; glabrous. Leaf-blade apex attenuate; filiform.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Synflorescence bractiferous; paniculate; 10-40 cm long; open; with spathaceous subtending bracts (with dwarf blade), or foliaceous subtending bracts (sparsely); bracts 4-10 mm long; without axillary buds at base of spikelet; prophyllate below lateral spikelets. Fertile spikelets sessile, or pedicelled. Pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Spikelets
Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; laterally compressed; compressed slightly; 5-6 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.
Fertile
Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; laterally compressed; compressed slightly; 5-6 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Bracts Glume
Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 2.5-3 mm long; scarious; without keels; 9 -veined. Lower glume surface glabrous. Lower glume apex truncate, or obtuse. Upper glume oblong, or ovate; 4-5 mm long; scarious; without keels; 11 -veined. Upper glume apex truncate, or obtuse.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Florets
Fertile lemma oblong, or ovate; 5-6 mm long; chartaceous, or coriaceous; without keel; 9 -veined. Lemma surface glabrous; inner surface pubescent (at apex). Lemma apex obtuse; cucullate. Palea 5.5 mm long; 1 length of lemma; coriaceous; 6 -veined. Palea keels approximate. Rhachilla extension 4 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Lodicules 3; glabrous. Anthers 6. Stigmas 3. Ovary umbonate; glabrous.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; oblong, or ovoid; 4 mm long.
Distribution
Pacific: southwestern.
