Perennial. Rhizomes short. Culms erect; 23-45 cm long; wiry. Culm-nodes swollen (to form a lip); glabrous. Leaves cauline; 4-5 per branch. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base broadly rounded; with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades oblong; 3-5.5 cm long; 5-10 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade apex obtuse.

Monoecious; with male and female spikelets in different inflorescences. Inflorescence composed of racemes; axillary; embraced at base by subtending leaf.
