The native range of this species is SE. U.S.A. to E. & S. South America, W. Tropical Africa to Chad. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as animal food and a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.
