Note
Notes. This species has a broad distribution within which the inflorescence characters, particularly calyx lobe length, appear to vary, as does the leaf shape, size and indumentum. Close examination of this variation shows that it is continuous, as previously concluded by Keng (1969). Attempts by other authors to recognise this variation formally have resulted in a large number of names across the distribution, especially in Thailand (e.g. Murata 1976). Since these are not used in Borneo, only those synonyms relevant are used here, the rest will be covered in a later Flora Malesiana treatment. The proliferation of sessile yellow to white gland dots on the surface of the lower leaf, and on the centre of the stellate hairs on the stems, and inflorescence, gives Gomphostemmajavanicum its overall yellow appearance which is distinct from any of the other species. Gomphostemmajavanicum is occasionally found in Peninsular Malaysia where it grows as single stemmed plants that are widely scattered. However, the Bornean plants of G. javanicum examined tend to be found in large patches and have many stems, often suckering (e.g. Beaman 10666 (MSC)).
