The native range of this species is Macaronesia, Europe, Medit. to N. Iran and N. Ethiopia. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is used to treat unspecified medicinal disorders, as a medicine and invertebrate food, has environmental uses and for food.
