Morphology General Habit
Suffruticose perennial 30–60(100) cm tall, with several to many ± erect stems from a woody rootstock; stems with two opposite lines of ascending hairs, later glabrescent.

Leaves subsessile, somewhat coriaceous, narrowly oblong-elliptic to more broadly ovate, 8.5–16 × 2–6 cm, base cuneate to obtuse or rounded, apex acute to rounded, basal pairs often smaller and somewhat obovate, glabrous when mature; lateral veins 5–7(8) pairs.

Inflorescence a dense terminal cylindrical or capitate head, 3.5–9.5 cm long, sometimes with additional solitary flowers in uppermost leafy axils; bracts ovate, elliptic or somewhat obovate, 15–33 × 3–14 mm, margin long-ciliate at least in proximal half and sometimes along veins, hairs usually with swollen bases; bracteoles as bracts but ovate-lanceolate to oblanceolate, 1.5–7.5 mm wide, hairs on margin more numerous; flowers subsessile.

Anterior calyx lobe elliptic or subrhombic, 16–28.5 × 7.5–12(17) mm, base obtuse or acute, apex with two deltate lobes 4.5–8.5(11) mm long, indumentum as bracteoles, venation palmate, ± prominent; posterior lobe ovate, 16–31 × 5.5–11(14.5) mm, apex acute or obtuse; lateral lobes lanceolate, 7–13.5 mm long.

Corolla 27–42 mm long, white, blue or mauve, limb pubescent externally, hairs mainly eglandular; tube cylindrical, 11.5–16.5 mm long, somewhat expanded towards mouth; limb subregular; lobes 13.5–24.5 mm long, abaxial lobe 9–14 mm wide, lateral lobes 7.5–13.5 mm, adaxial lobes 5.5–10.5 mm.
