Morphology General Habit
Spreading spiny (sub)shrub 40–100 cm tall, often drying dark brown; stems viscid glandular-pubescent to pilose, with or without interspersed long spreading pale-buff hairs numerous at nodes.

Leaves elliptic to obovate, 1.5–3.7 × 0.5–1.8 cm, base cuneate or attenuate, apex acute to rounded, mucronate, surfaces glandular-pubescent, with long pale-buff or greyish coarse spreading or ascending hairs; lateral veins 3–4 pairs; petiole 0–5 mm long.

Inflorescence axillary, single-flowered, densely viscid glandular-pubescent to pilose throughout; peduncle 1–11 mm long; bracteoles spinose, 15–33 × 1–2.5 mm, margin entire, sometimes with a narrow blade either side of prominent midrib; pedicels 1–5 mm long.

Calyx green-brown at first with darker reticulate venation, later turning scarious; anterior lobe oblong-elliptic to obovate, 17–24 × 4–7 mm, margin entire or with minute teeth formed by swollen hair bases towards apex, apex attenuate into apical spine, rarely bifidly so, surfaces densely glandular-pubescent, hairs often longest and most dense at base, sparsely strigose along veins and margin; posterior lobe as anterior or sometimes lanceolate, 20–26 × 4–9 mm; lateral lobes linear(-oblanceolate), 16–23 mm long.

Corolla 51–85 mm long, white, fading to pale blue, drying dark blue to blue-black, externally pilose with eglandular and glandular hairs; tube cylindrical, 35–65 mm long, somewhat widened towards mouth; limb in 2+3 arrangement; abaxial and lateral lobes 15–21 × 8–13 mm; adaxial lobes 15–18 × 6–10 mm.

Stamens attached 20–40 mm from base of corolla tube; filaments 27–36 mm long; anthers exserted, 5–7.5 mm long; lateral staminodes 3.5–7 mm long, sparsely to densely hairy at base, antherodes undeveloped or obsolete.

Ovary with dense tuft of white crisped-spreading hairs at apex; style glabrous; stigma clavate or linear, 0.8–2.3 mm long.

Open bushland, grassland or Brachystegia woodland on dry hillslopes over serpentine rocks; 900–1400 m.
Conservation notes: Endemic to a northern section of the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. Golding (Sthn. Afr. Pl. Red Data Lists: 171, 2002) assessed it as of Least Concern, citing its favoured habitat of open rocky slopes. Mining may have resulted in the loss of some populations, although spoil resulting from small-scale mining can create favourable conditions. In view of the inferred threat, probably best considered Vulnerable under IUCN criterion B.
