Acanthaceae (part 1), Kaj Vollesen, Flora of Tropical East Africa, 2008

Morphology General Habit
Erect to straggling (rarely procumbent) perennial or shrubby herb; stems up to 1(–1.5) m long, glabrous to finely sericeous-puberulous, sometimes with longer hairs intermixed (rarely pubescent).
Morphology Leaves
Leaves: larger pair more than 5(–3) times longer than smaller (but see note); lamina of larger lanceolate to narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, largest 7–21 × 0.7–2.5(–3) cm, margin on some or all toothed in lower 1/2–2/3, sparsely scabrid-pubescent on both sides (rarely glabrous); smaller pair rhomboid-triangular (rarely elliptic) in outline, 1–3.5 cm long, 3(–7)-veined from base, with one large triangular tooth on each side.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Heads globose or elongated, on upper part of stems; peduncle up to 8 cm long, puberulous or sericeous-puberulous or densely so with ordinary hairs and stalked capitate glands; axes sericeous-puberulous, with scattered capitate glands; floral leaves and outer bracts narrowly ovate-elliptic, 2–6.5 cm long, puberulous to sericeous or sparsely so, with few to many capitate glands; inner bracts similar, up to 2.5 cm long, with dense capitate glands.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Sepals with similar indumentum, ciliate; dorsal ovate-elliptic or narrowly so, (20–)26–38 mm long, with long (rarely short) ligulate apical part, apex acute (rarely truncate), 3-toothed, lateral teeth absent (rarely 1–2 per side); ventral similar, (18–)20–29 mm long, not ligulate, shortly to deeply (teeth up to 8 mm long) bifid, without (rarely with) central tooth, without or with 1–4(–6) lateral teeth per side; lateral (18–)20–32 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla bright blue or purple, (27–)33–50 mm long of which the tube 5–10 mm; limb distinctly 3-lobed, below with few to many capitate glands, callus with 3 equally strong ribs or central weaker and with 3 large apical flanges.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens Filaments
Filaments (5–)6–14 mm long, glabrous; appendage 4–6 mm long, triangular in outline and flattened towards the anther, tapering to an obtuse curved tip; anthers (4–)5–7.5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Capsule 10–13 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Seeds
Seed ± 7 × 4 mm, ovoid.

Distribution
Range: Tanzania. Range: Congo-Kinshasa, Burundi, Angola, Zambia Flora districts: T4 T7 Range: Congo-Kinshasa, Burundi, Angola, Zambia
Ecology
Grassland on black clay, riverine woodland and bushland, Brachystegia woodland on sandy soil and rocky outcrops, lakeshores; 750–2150 m
Note
The dorsal sepal is only 20 mm long, ventral and lateral 18 mm long and the corolla 27 mm long. Bally 7507 from Ugalla River has the smaller leaf pair about 1/3 of the larger and some of the smaller elliptic and 7-veined. But in some whorls one pair is 2–3 times longer than the other, and the collection has the large calyx and corolla of B. buchneri. Batty 719 from Iringa and Geilinger 3157 from Mbeya District – the only collections seen from T 7 – have short (22 mm long) dorsal sepal and small (30 mm long) corolla. There is the possibility that this is a hybrid between B. buchneri and B. stuhlmannii, but specimens with similarly small sepals and corolla are known from Zambia as well. It has short (10–15 cm long) procumbent stems and most leaves are ± subequal. Richards 7254 from Ufipa District: Mt Chala also seems to be but an abnormal form of Blepharis buchneri. More collections are needed from T 7 to decide whether this is a distinct taxon. The ventral sepal also has a central tooth, but this a variable character in other species and no great emphasis can be put on it.

Native to:

Angola, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Zaïre
