The native range of this species is Tropical & Subtropical Old World to N. & E. Australia. It is a climbing shrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as animal food, a poison and a medicine, has environmental uses and social uses and for food.

Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Caribbean. Elevation range: 5–2500 m a.s.l. Naturalised in Colombia. Colombian departments: Amazonas, Antioquia, Bolívar, Guaviare, Magdalena, Meta, Putumayo, San Andrés y Providencia, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Vaupés.
