Erect shrubby herb to 1.5 m tall (rarely basal part of stem creeping and rooting); young stems conspicuously swollen for 0.5–3 cm below nodes, purplish, subglabrous to finely sericeous

Leaves opposite or in whorls of 4, dark green above, pale beneath; petiole 0.5–4 cm long; lamina elliptic to obovate, largest (6.5–)8.5–22 × (2.5–)3–7.8 cm, apex acute to acuminate, concave below the blunt tip; entire to slightly crenate; with (7–)9–17 main lateral veins each side, subglabrous to finely and sparsely sericeous beneath, densest on veins
