Leaves broadly ovate to elliptic, largest (mature) 8–16 × 6–9 cm, less than twice as long as wide, apex drawn out into an elongated subacute tip, base cuneate with a distinct petiole 1–3 cm long, margin grossly crenate to dentate, puberulous along veins below, subglabrous to sparsely uniformly pubescent above; stipule sheath ± 0.5 mm long

Flowers in many-flowered condensed axillary cymes merging into narrow panicles; floral leaves gradually smaller and bract-like upwards; outer bracts sometimes leafy, up to 3.5 cm long, otherwise bracts and bracteoles somewhat scarious, lanceolate, 8–15 mm long, acuminate to cuspidate, sparsely puberulous along midrib and crisped-ciliate, bracteoles also with scattered subsessile capitate glands towards apex

Ecology
Riverine forest, edges and clearings of montane forest, grassland on black cotton soil, riverbanks, lakeshores, termite mounds in Brachystegia woodland; 700–1550 m
Note
Sometimes acts as a firebreak between grassland and forest and then survives for some time in pockets within the occasionally expanding forest.
