Erect perennial herb with unbranched or sparsely branched stems from a creeping woody rootstock; stems to 1 m long, when young glabrous to puberulous and with scattered to dense long broad spreading or antrorse glossy hairs

Leaves elliptic or narrowly so or slightly obovate, largest 6–11 × 1.3–2.5(–3) cm, apex acute or subacute, base attenuate, decurrent to stem or with a distinct petiole to 3(–5) mm long, subglabrous or with scattered to dense long broad glossy hairs, margin subentire to dentate; stipule sheath 0.5–2 mm long
