Morphology General Habit
Perennial herb to 1.25 m tall, rarely shrubby, usually with several stems from a woody rootstock; young stems glabrous (rarely slightly puberulous on uppermost node) or uniformly puberulous, often glaucous.

Leaves glabrous (hairy along midrib) or uniformly puberulous, often glaucous, sessile or petiole to 3 mm long; lamina ovate-elliptic to pandurate, largest 5–15 × 2.7–6 cm; apex acute or subacute; base auriculate to cordate, clasping stem.

Inflorescence 3–21 cm long; peduncle 4–12 mm long; axis puberulous, with few to many stalked capitate glands (rarely without); bracts ovate to elliptic, acuminate with straight mucro 1–3 mm, 12–22 × 7–15 mm, upper puberulous or sparsely so, with usually dense stalked capitate glands (rarely without), indistinctly ciliate; bracteoles 2–3.5 mm long; flowers solitary or in 3s at lower nodes.
