Stems stout, stiffly erect, strigulose, up to 60 cm. tall from a perennial woody base.

Lower leaves often simple, upper up to 11-foliolate; stipules triangular, strigulose, up to 3 mm. long; rhachis strigulose, up to 9 cm. long, including a petiole of 4 mm., prolonged up to 5 mm. beyond lateral leaflets; leaflets opposite or alternate, narrowly oblong, up to 6 cm. long and 1.5 cm. wide but often much smaller, typically scabrid above with short stiff hairs ± 0.2 mm. long.
