Perennial herb with a stout woody rootstock; stems appressed strigulose, procumbent, erect or spreading, up to 50 cm. long.

Lower leaves (which are those most often seen) 1–3-foliolate, upper up to 8-foliolate; stipules narrowly triangular-subulate, up to 8 mm. long; rhachis broad, channelled above, up to 4 cm. long, including a petiole of up to 1 cm., prolonged up to 8 mm. beyond the lateral leaflets; leaflets always alternate, cuneate-elliptic or narrowly oblong, up to 6 cm. long and 12 mm. wide, strigulose beneath, minutely black-spotted and glabrous above, except at the margins which are strigulose.
