- An annual up to 35 cm. tall, more or less densely covered with long softly silky hairs in addition to biramous hairs on the leaflets and minute glandular hairs on the margins of the bracts.

- Leaves 3–7(–9)-foliolate; stipules ovate-acuminate, ± 10 mm. long and 4 mm. wide, almost or quite as large as the elliptic lateral leaflets; rhachis prolonged 3–5 mm. beyond the lateral leaflets, in all ± 20 mm. long, including a petiole of 2–4 mm.

- Racemes 2-flowered, with peduncles ± 2 mm. long, up to 5 mm. in fruit, and pedicels 1–2 mm. long, reflexed in fruit, concealed within large bracts which are accrescent in fruit and consist of a pair of stipules united to near the middle, with or without a point in the notch between them (the rudimentary rhachis); these overlapping bracts form strobili in the leaf-axils and may elongate to 3–8 cm. or more in fruit.
