Erect or scrambling (sometimes forming tangles) perennial or shrubby herb to 2(–3) m tall; stems puberulous and sometimes with long pilose hairs and/or stalked glands on upper nodes below inflorescence

Leaves with petiole distinct, up to 13.5 cm long; lamina ovate to broadly so, elliptic or cordiform, largest 6–20.5 × 3–15 cm, margin subentire to grossly dentate, apex acuminate to cuspidate, base cuneate to cordate, the two sides often unequal, puberulous, beneath densest along veins with lamina often ± glabrous, above only along veins

Calyx sticky, often whitish with green tips, 10–23 mm long of which the fused basal part 2–5 mm, sparsely to densely glandular-puberulous and with (rarely without) long glossy pilose hairs; lobes linear-oblong or slightly spathulate, acute to rounded. Corolla white to pale mauve, lower lip with darker front edge to fully dark purple, pleated area yellow to orange, setae white with dark tips, 25–42 mm long, cylindric tube 6–15 mm, throat 5–9 mm, middle lobe in lower lip triangular, truncate, 10–21 × 4–9 mm, lateral lobes oblong, rounded, 10–20 × 3–6 mm, lobes in upper lip ovate-oblong, rounded, 11–25 × 3–6 mm
