The native range of this species is Gauteng to SW. Mozambique and Eswatini. It is a geophyte and grows primarily in the subtropical biome.

Perianth deep bright blue, c.30 mm long; segments spreading but not widely so, ovate or obovate, outer ones 8–9 mm wide, inner ones 10–11 mm wide.

Distribution
Also in South Africa (Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng Provinces) and Swaziland. Southern Mozambique represents the species' most northerly limit.
Ecology
In open grassland, on seasonally wet sites; c.600 m.
Conservation
Conservation notes: A widespread species within its range; very localised in the Flora area, possibly Vulnerable. Regarded as Data Deficient in South Africa (Sabonet Red List database, Golding 2002).
