The native range of this species is Tanzania to S. Africa. It is a bulbous geophyte and grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.

Note
The type of Drimiopsis minor Van der Merwe, non Baker, closely matches specimens of D. maculata from Mozambique, but is more slender. The taxonomic relationship between the two needs further assessment.
