Morphology General Habit
Shrub or small tree up to 12 m. high or liana, much branched, with spines up to 4.2 cm. long, without latex; branches angular, purplish black and glabrous when young, becoming terete, striate, with numerous lenticels, eventually grey.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves fasciculate or not, petiolate, glabrous; lamina subconcolorous, elliptic or elliptic-oblong to elliptic-ovate or lanceolate to obovate, 2–7(–14) × 0.9–4.5(–7.3) cm., obtuse (rarely shortly and obtusely acuminate) to rounded, with margin entire or finely shallowly crenate-serrulate, attenuate to cuneate or rarely rounded at the base, chartaceous, with lateral nerves and rather densely reticulate venation slightly more prominent beneath than above; petiole 3–9(–14) mm. long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Cymes 1–3 cm. long, dichasial or ± monochasial, solitary and axillary or in fascicles on short shoots, with peduncle (2–)7–12(–22) mm. long, glabrous; pedicels 3–6 mm. long, articulated near the base, glabrous; flowers 3–15 in each cyme, scented, unisexual (plants dioecious), ♂ ± 5 mm. in diameter, ♀ ± 2–2.5 mm. in diameter.

Sepals 5, equal, circular or oblate, ± 1 mm. long, glabrous, with margin entire.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Petals 5, white to cream, oblong, 1.5 (♀)–2.5 (♂) mm. long, with margin entire to finely denticulate.
sex Male
Male flowers:stamens 5, equalling petals; filaments ± 2–2.5 mm., slender, arising below the disc; disc narrow, convex, ± 5-lobed; pistillode small, subglobose, with style unbranched.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Female flowers; staminodes 5, ± half as long as petals, with filaments ± 0.5 mm.; disc as in ♂; ovary 3-locular, ovoid to subglobose, glabrous, ± quarter-immersed in the disc; style ± 1.5 times as long as the ovary, 3-branched at the apex; stigmas broad, ± bifid. Male flowers:stamens 5, equalling petals; filaments ± 2–2.5 mm., slender, arising below the disc; disc narrow, convex, ± 5-lobed; pistillode small, subglobose, with style unbranched.
sex Female
Female flowers; staminodes 5, ± half as long as petals, with filaments ± 0.5 mm.; disc as in ♂; ovary 3-locular, ovoid to subglobose, glabrous, ± quarter-immersed in the disc; style ± 1.5 times as long as the ovary, 3-branched at the apex; stigmas broad, ± bifid.
