- Annual or perennial (fide Greenway) with dense tufted stems and shallow roots.

- Stems 3–20 together, 4–15 cm long excluding the inflorescence bract (which adds another 15–40 cm), round or 3-angular, 1–2 mm thick

- Leaf sheaths green, much wider than the stem, ending in a triangular lobe; often with solitary basal flower, nutlet to 2.6 × 2.3 mm Leaves absent.
