Peperomia masuthoniana is un­common and found only in Doi Chiangdao, Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. However, the populations are small and restricted to the protected area of Chiangdao wildlife sanctuary. We assess the new species with the provisional rating of Vulnerable (VU) and the category D1, according to IUCN (2011) criteria.
Endemic to northern Thailand (Chiang Mai province).
Epiphytic on pine and oak trees or epilithic in open areas or mountain summits at 1200 - 1500 m above sea level.

Peperomia masuthoniana is most similar to P. heyneana but can be distinguished by the stem densely puberulent vs glabrous, puberulous or densely scabrous; (3 -) 4-verticillate rarely opposite vs opposite or 3 - 4-verticillate on terminal shoot; inflorescence 5 - 8 cm long vs 8 - 12 cm long; fruit apex beaked vs acute. The specific epithet honours Associate Prof. Sumon Masuthon (1952 - present), Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, who encouraged the first author to intensively study the family Piperaceae for the Flora of Thailand project. Peperomia masuthoniana is characterised by having (3 -) 4-verticillate leaves (rarely opposite). The stems are densely puberulent. The fruit is ellipsoid and the apex is beaked, formed from the style. The fruit surface has sparsely rounded papillae. A comparison of characters between P. masuthoniana and it most similar species, P. heyneana, is shown in Table 2.
Flowering and fruiting occur between October and December.
