[O-EM]
General Description

Plant compact to slender, 10-35 cm tall with 2-8 flowers in a lax spike. Sepals violet to (greenish) white or olive-green, ovate to oblanceolate- oblong, 10-17 × 3.5-9 mm; dorsal sepal nearly flat, more or less incurved, from the base reflexed. Petals rose-coloured to purplish violet or white with a greenish tinge, narrowly triangular to lanceolate-oblong with flat or wavy margins, 6-11 × 2.5-4 mm, (nearly) glabrous, recurved to spreading. Lip with (purplish) black ground colour, straight, flat or with more or less recurved sides, entire to moderately three-lobed, 10-18.5 × 10-19.5 mm, dark velvety along the margin (otherwise nearly glabrous); bulges rarely present and then only weakly developed, distinctly isolated from the margin of the lip (side lobes flat, if present); front edge rounded to slightly emarginate, often provided with a short, porrect to downward directed, triangular to awl-shaped point; mirror distinct, consisting of a more or less horseshoe-shaped figure or two longitudinal bands of drop-shaped spots, placed centrally without connection to the base of the lip, shining bluish grey (rarely with a white border). Column acute (to obtuse), not tapering towards the base (in side view); stigmatic cavity at least as wide as long and approximately twice as wide as the anther, with dark, lateral, eye-like knobs at base.

Habitat

Calcareous, dry to moist soil in full sunlight to light shade, from sea level to 1000 m altitude. Typical habitats include roadside slopes, stony grassland, garrigue, open pine woods and pesticide-free olive groves.

Distribution

From the Balkans to Anatolia, where by far the major number of populations are situated in the southwest. There are no confirmed finds from Crete, but the species occurs in Karpathos. Additionally, it seems likely that O. ferrum-equinum occurs in Bulgaria – see note under subsp. ferrum-equinum. [Aeg, Alb, Cre, Gre; Ana]

Native to:

Albania, East Aegean Is., Greece, Turkey
