Habitat

Dry to moist, calcareous to slightly acid soil in full sunlight to partial shade, from sea level to 1300 m altitude. Typical habitats include roadside slopes, garrigue, old olive groves, graveyards and open to rather dense pine and oak woods.

General Description

Plant slender, 15-50 cm tall with 2-10 flowers in a lax spike. Sepals pale rose-coloured to purplish violet (less frequently pale green to white), narrowly ovate to oblanceolate-oblong, 12-16 × 4-7.5 mm; dorsal sepal nearly flat, slightly incurved, from the base reflexed. Petals pale rosecoloured to green, often suffused with brown or red, narrowly triangular (occasionally auriculate) with flat margins, 4-8 × 1.5-2.5 mm, velvety to shaggy, spreading to somewhat reflexed. Lip with black to dark brown ground colour, straight with more or less recurved margin, deeply threelobed at the base, 10-15 × 12-16 mm, shaggy (of frequently silvery hairs) on the side lobes, velvety along the margin of the mid-lobe (otherwise subglabrous); side lobes converted into obliquely conical (to weakly developed) bulges; mid-lobe much longer than the side lobes, rounded, provided with a short, more or less porrect, triangular point; mirror distinct, consisting of a more or less horseshoe-shaped figure, or two drop-shaped figures, without connection to the base of the lip, white or shining greyish violet with a white border. Column acute, not tapering towards the base (in side view); stigmatic cavity wider than long and approximately twice as wide as the anther, devoid of lateral, eye-like knobs at base.

Distribution

The southwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Ionian Islands and on the Aegean Islands (where it is common on Rhodes, for example). An isolated occurrence in southeastern Bulgaria was discovered as recently as 2003. The total range of the species also includes Cyprus, southern and southwestern Anatolia, Iran and Iraq.
