General Description

A terrestrial herb. Leaves 3–8, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, acute or subacute at unequally bilobulate apex, 7–17 cm long, 2.3–4.2 cm wide, pale green below, tessellated light and darker green above, margins shortly ciliate towards base. Inflorescence erect, 1-flowered; peduncle 12–20 cm long, slender, purple, purple-pubescent; bract narrowly ovate-elliptic, 1.5–1.7 cm long, 0.7 cm wide, green, purple- and white-pubescent. Flowers 7–10 cm across; dorsal sepal white heavily veined with purple-maroon; synsepalum green with darker veins; petals glossy maroon, greenish white towards base, heavily spotted with blackish maroon in lower two-thirds; lip brownish maroon; staminode pale ochrepurple with darker veins; pedicel and ovary 2.5–4 cm long, green, purple-pubescent. Dorsal sepal ovatecordate, apiculate or acuminate, 2.5–3.5 cm long, 2.2–4.3 cm wide. Synsepal lanceolate, acute, 2–3.5 cm long, 1.2–1.6 cm wide. Petals more or less horizontal, narrowly elliptic to oblong, acute to obtuse, 3.5–4.6 cm long, 0.9–1.3 cm wide, margin ciliate. Lip 3.3–4.4 cm long, 2–2.7 cm wide, verrucose on incurved side-lobes. Staminode lunate, 8 mm long, 8–11 mm wide, apical teeth acute, pubescent. Stamens with elongate acute filament apices. 2n = 40.

Distribution

Hong Kong, adjacent parts of Guangdong Province of China and ? Hainan Island; 30–700 m altitude.
