Distribution

Borneo: Sabah only; 600–1200 m altitude.

General Description

A terrestrial or lithophytic herb often growing in large clumps. Leaves several, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, acute, up to 60 cm long, 4–5 cm wide, sparsely ciliate at base, green. Inflorescence 2- to 4- (6-)flowered, erect; peduncle up to 45 cm long, purple, shortly pubescent; bracts ovate-elliptic, obtuse, up to 5.5 cm long, ciliate and hairy on mid-vein, pale green or yellow, purplestriped. Flowers very large, 14–30 cm in diameter; ovary up to 7.5 cm long, pale green sparsely spotted purple, glabrous. Dorsal sepal ovate, acute to acuminate, 5.4–6.8 cm long, 3.3–4.8 cm wide, ivory-white or yellow with maroon veins. Synsepal similar but smaller, 4.8–6 cm long, 3.2–4.4 cm wide. Petals narrowly tapering to rounded apex, 8–14 cm long, 0.7–1.5 cm wide, ciliate, papillose towards apex, yellow or ivory-white marked with maroon. Lip subporrect, grooved on back, 5.3–6 cm long, 2.2–2.5 cm wide, golden, heavily purple-suffused; side-lobes not auricular. Staminode linear, bifid at apex, geniculate, 14–16 mm long, 4–5 mm wide, densely glandular-pubescent on margins and at base, pale yellow-green. 2n = 26.
