Morphology General Habit
Suffrutex with annual shoots up to 2 m. tall arising from a woody rootstock; stems and branches red-brown to dark-brown, cylindric and glabrous on the lower part, subangular and ± shortly puberulous or glabrescent towards the apex, striate, rather densely leafy.

Leaves mostly subverticillate; petiole 0·2–0·5 cm., grooved on the upper face, convex beneath, puberulous or minutely appressed-hairy to glabrescent; lamina very discolorous, cinnamon-coloured or greenish-brown to dark brown, shining and glabrous above, ± whitish beneath (densely covered with minute and appressed hairs), (3) 5–16 × (0·3) 0·8–2 cm., linear to oblong-lanceolate, frequently infolded at the midrib, attenuate, very acute and mucronate at the apex, with thickened pale undulate or flat margin, ± acute at the base, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, very rigid and brittle when dry; midrib impressed above, very prominent and ± sparsely appressed-hairy beneath; lateral nerves 1–1·5 mm. apart, slightly prominent above, a little more so below, usually not forked until the margin; tertiary nerves and veins not visible.

Inflorescences terminal and subverticillate and axillary, the latter generally shorter than the leaves, up to 3 cm. long, on peduncles 0·5–9 cm. long, the axis and branches striate, minutely appressed-hairy.
