Rubiaceae, B. Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 1976

Morphology General Habit
Straggling or climbing herb 0.5–2.4 m. long; stems weak, mostly with small prickles but otherwise glabrous (except for a hairy ring at the nodes), or with sparse curved hairs when young.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves and stipules in whorls of 4–8; blades linear-oblanceolate, 0.5–3.2(–4) cm. long, 1–2.5(–4) mm. wide, with a distinct acumen at the apex, often deflexed, cuneate at the base, glabrous and often somewhat shining but margins and midnerve with very recurved coarse prickles making the whole plant harshly adhesive.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Cymes ± condensed, 0.3–0.5 cm. long, and some flowers solitary; pedicels 0–2 mm. long or, in case of solitary flowers, up to 0.8–1.4 cm. long in fruit.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx-tube biglobose, 0.35–0.6 mm. long, 0.4–0.85 mm. wide, glabrous, with clusters of large cells around the rim.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla white, green or yellowish green, ± 4 mm. wide; tube 0.3–0.4 mm. long; lobes narrowly triangular, 1.3–1.7 mm. long, 0.7–0.8 mm. wide, acute and with an inflexed acumen.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Fruits black or purplish black and fleshy; cocci 2.5–3.5 mm. in diameter, glabrous (see note).
Habitat
Undergrowth of forest edges, bushland, woodland, etc., also in rough pasture, swamps with tall sedge borders; 1500–2700 m.
