The native range of this species is Tropical & Subtropical Asia to N. Australia. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is has environmental uses and social uses, as a medicine and for fuel and food.

Biogeografic region: Andean, Caribbean, Pacific. Elevation range: 12–1200 m a.s.l. Cultivated in Colombia. Naturalised in Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Chocó, Córdoba, Quindío, San Andrés y Providencia.
