Known from four collections in the Rio Grande valley system of central Bolivia
The plant occurs in disturbed dry bushland. Altitude 2000 - 2900 m.

This species has characters of many of the species groups outlined here and highlights the artificiality of the genera currently recognised. Its closest affinities probably lie with Philibertia campanulata which has a similar but more open corolla, also with reddish markings. Other characters supporting this placement include the rhomboid corpusculum and the corona, which although vestigial, occurs in a similar position. Occasional collections of P. campanulata even have a sublanate indumentum (e.g. Wood & Zarati 16210 from Cochabamba prov. Ayopaya). However, such heavily felted leaves and the domed stigma head are normally associated with the 'Mitostigma' and 'Amblystigma' groups and suggest a strong link to these groups. The anther wings are similar to those of P. speciosa ('Mitostigma' group), and similar corolla markings are also found in P. tactila ('Amblystigma' group).
