Morphology General Habit
Tree to 30 m tall with usually rather smooth bark but Kenya material reported as small tree with rough brown bark.

Leaves palmately 5(–7)-foliolate, leaflets elliptic to oblong-obovate, up to 25 × 14 cm, acute to shortly acuminate at the apex, obtuse to truncate at the base, usually with stellate pubescence on main venation above and more extensive beneath.

Petiole 6–30 cm long, stellate-pubescent; petiolules 3–8 cm long.

R.O. Williams (U.O.P.Z.: 458) mentions “Tabebuia rufescens ( Tecoma glomerata) as growing in Zanzibar gardens opposite the hospital and a native of Trinidad with golden flowers. Gentry (Fl. Neotrop. 25(2): 165 (1992)) gives T. rufescens J.R. Johnston as a synonym of T. chrysantha subsp. chrysantha and Venezuela as the type locality. Tecoma glomerata I have not been able to trace. It seems likely that the tree introduced into Zanzibar was typical Tabebuia chrysantha but without material it is not certain. It may not now still be growing in the island.
