Type
Brazil, Amazonas, Forzza 290 (holotypus UB; isotypi NY, RB).
Morphology General Habit
Liana; branchlets obscurely tetragonal, angles not ribbed, lepidote-punctuate, nodes without interpetiolar glandular fields, prophylls of axillary bud non-foliaceous, rounded, eccentrically acuminate, 0.3 – 0.5 × 0.3 cm, glabrous above and below, with plate-shaped glands below
Morphology Leaves
Leaves 2-ternate, leaflets wide-elliptic, acuminate to short-acuminate or sometimes rounded, base obtuse to rounded, 5.1 – 17.1 × 2.9 – 11.3 cm, chartaceous, glabrous above and conspicuously lepidote-punctuate below, with plate-shaped glands more abundantly distributed below than above, concentrated near the tip or close to the primary vein, tendrils trifid, petiole 3.7 – 6.3 cm long, lateral petiolules 1 – 2 cm long and terminal petiolules 2.3 – 4.2 cm long
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence an axillary raceme with a well-developed rachis, 7 – 31 cm long, sparsely lepidote, 6 – 22-flowered, bracteoles triangular, 2 – 3 × 1 mm, glabrous to sparsely lepidote
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Flowers whitish, tube cream, lobes white, pedicels 2.5 – 4.3 cm long, calyx tubular, 1.9 – 2.4 × 0.6 – 0.9 cm, smooth and ribs not evident, truncate, shortly denticulate, sparsely ciliate, inconspicuously sparse lepidote, with few plate-shaped glands below margin, corolla hypocrateriform, 8.9 – 12.6 × 1 – 1.4 cm, tube 8 – 9.3 cm long, glabrous externally and internally, lobes acute, 1.7 – 3.6 cm long, externally pubescent-lepidote with plate-shaped glands at the base, internally densely lepidote, stamens didynamous to fairly homodynamous, the longer pair 1.6 – 2.5 cm long, the shorter pair 1.3 – 1.9 cm long, insertion 6 – 7.6 cm from base of corolla, anther thecae exserted, divaricate, 11 – 13 mm long, staminode 9 mm long, inserted at the same level as the stamens, style 7.6 – 8.5 cm long, glabrous, ovary linear-oblong, compressed, 7 – 8 × 1.5 – 2 mm, densely lepidote, ovules 65, indistinct 6-seriate in each locule, nectariferous disc pulvinate, 2 – 2.5 × 2 – 3 mm
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Capsule unknown
Distribution
South America: Brazil.
Ecology
Upland rain forest; 90 m.
Conservation
Data Deficient (DD).
Note
(longus, a, um – long; flos, floris – flower); the epithet refers to the flowers which have the longest corollas known in the genus. This distinctive new species of Pleonotoma is easily recognised by the combination of weakly tetragonal branchlets with unribbed angles, non-foliaceous, flat, rounded prophylls of the axillary bud with an eccentric tip, 2-ternate leaves, broad axillary racemes, elongate tubular calyx and hypocrateriform corolla up to 12 cm long. P. longiflora is intermediate between P. castelnaei (with which it shares the inflorescence structure and long hypocrateriform corolla) and P. variabilis (with which it shares most vegetative characters, except for the dendritic hairs, which are exclusive to P. variabilis).
