Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; 100 cm long. Lateral branches lacking. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode. Leaf-sheath oral hairs ciliate; 5 mm long. Leaf-sheath auricles erect. Ligule a ciliolate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a false petiole. Leaf-blades persistent; lanceolate; 25-50 cm long; 20-35 mm wide; coriaceous. Leaf-blade surface pubescent; hairy abaxially. Leaf-blade margins scabrous.
