The native range of this species is Sahara to Tropical Africa, Aldabra, Arabian Peninsula. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as animal food, a medicine and invertebrate food, has environmental uses and social uses and for fuel and food.
