Flora Zambesiaca Acanthaceae (part 2) by Iain Darbyshire, Kaj Vollesen and Ensermu Kelbessa

Morphology General Habit
Much-branched perennial herb or suffrutex, erect to procumbent, 30–75 cm tall; stems with dense long appressed or ascending buff-coloured hairs, with shorter, finer spreading hairs on two opposite sides.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves (oblong-)elliptic to ovate, 1.7–5.2 × 0.8–2.8 cm, base cuneate to rounded or subcordate, margin revolute when young, apex acute or obtuse, margin and veins beneath with long appressed hairs, elsewhere with few to numerous fine spreading hairs; lateral veins 3–5 pairs, prominent beneath; petiole 0–5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence usually congested into a short spike 3.5–11 cm long terminating main and short lateral branches, sometimes more widely spaced and axillary, each cyme single-flowered, sessile; bracts as leaves but reducing upwards, typically 10–20 × 3.5–10 mm in spike; bracteoles linear, lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, 7–18(25) × 1–2.5(4.5) mm, margin entire, apex acute, ± apiculate, hairs as on leaves, often with scattered capitate short-stalked glands.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx blue- or pink-tinged at first with darker venation, soon turning pale-scarious, accrescent; outer lobes subequal, broadly ovate(-elliptic), 15–30(34) × 10–21 mm, base rounded, cordate or cuneate, margin coarsely to shallowly dentate, teeth often antrorse with a flexuose apical bristle, apex acute- to obtuse-apiculate or anterior lobe with 2–3 apical teeth, surfaces with numerous long subappressed pale buff-coloured or silvery hairs most dense along margin, rarely with scattered short spreading glandular hairs; lateral lobes linear-lanceolate, 7–12(16) mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla 26–37 mm long, pale blue, mauve or pink, limb glandular-pilose externally; tube cylindrical, 10.5–13.5 mm long, curved; limb in 0+3 arrangement; abaxial and lateral lobes 14–23 × 9–18 mm; adaxial lobes absent or at most 2 × 2 mm.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Stamens attached 6–7 mm from base of corolla tube; filaments 12–16 mm long; anthers 3–5 mm long; lateral staminodes 1.7–2.5 mm long, pilose, antherodes not or barely developed.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Ovary
Ovary with apical ring of pale hairs; style with short glandular hairs towards apex, sometimes eglandular-hairy towards base; stigma capitate, 0.2–0.5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Capsule 15–19.5 mm long, glabrous or with sparse minute glandular hairs in distal half.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Seeds
Seeds 5.5–7 × 4–5 mm.
Distribution
Also in southern D.R. Congo (Shaba plateaux).
Ecology
Miombo woodland, grassland, rocky slopes over laterite and roadsides, in Congo sometimes recorded on mineral-rich deposits; c.1100 m.
Conservation
