The native range of this species is Tanzania. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Most closely allied to the Angolan species S. incarnatum K. Schum., but differs in the shorter anther wings (1.5 mm rather than ± 2 mm), the longer gynostegial stipe (± 3 mm rather than 0.5 mm), the corona lobes lacking prominent lateral teeth, and the pollinarium with a smaller proximal winged part to the translator arms (0.3 mm long, rather than 0.6 mm).
