Distribution
A small family of three genera with Galearia Zoll. & Moritzi and Microdesmis Planch. found in South-East Asia, and Panda Pierre in west Africa; only Galearia reaches New Guinea. Both Galeria and Microdesmis were traditionally treated as members of the Euphorbiaceae (and some authors still keep them in that family), but they differ in several characters especially the fruit morphology and wood anatomy.

Petals 5, contorted, imbricate or valvate, flattened or galeate-cucullate
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Nectaries
Disc small, rarely large, or absent
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium
Stamens 5, 10 or 15, uniseriate or biseriate, sometimes unequal; anthers introrse, 2-thecous, opening lengthwise; staminodes sometimes present in ? flowers; pistillode of ? flowers linear-subulate, cylindric or narrowly conical, sometimes pentagonal at base
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium
Ovary superior, 2–5-locular, with 1 (–2) apical pendulous orthotropous or anatropous ovules per locule, without obturator; styles 1–5, simple or bipartite
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
