Morphology General Habit
Perennial herb 0.3–1.2 m high; often bushy, in southern populations with woody rootstock, the branches often purplish, quadrangular, appressed-scabrid.

Leaves narrowly to broadly ovate, oblong or elliptic, sometimes ovate, 1.5–14 cm long, 0.6–7 cm wide, base subcordate to cuneate, margins coarsely serrate or dentate to remotely serrate, apex acute or acuminate, scabrid on both surfaces, 3-veined from base; petiole absent or up to 10 mm long.

Capitula terminal, solitary or in few-headed cymes, shallowly hemispherical but becoming globose with age, radiate; stalks of individual capitula 1–12 cm long; involucre 4–8.5 mm long, 2–3-seriate, the phyllaries ovate and pale green, the apices darker, pilose and often pectinate; paleae 6–9 mm long, acuminate to long-attenuate to elongate-setose, often yellow, often eroding and becoming fibrose with age.

Ray florets 6–20, yellow, orange-yellow or orange, tube ± 1 mm long, glabrous, style absent, ray 3–11(–13) mm long, 1–4.5 mm wide, densely pilose abaxially; tube florets darker yellow to orange-yellow, tube 3–4 mm long, lobes 0.5–0.9 mm long with stiff hairs.

Achenes ellipsoid, 1–2.8 mm long, 3–4-gonous, pilose; setae absent or 2–4, quickly deciduous, 0.5–3.3 mm long.
