Morphology Leaves
Lower and middle stem leaves 3–4-pinnate, when 3-pinnate the final segments linear-oblong, ± 2–4 × 1–1.75 mm., when 4-pinnate with very small, linear, mucronate, ± 1–2 × 0.4–0.6 mm. segments; lamina narrowly deltoid-oblong in outline, ± 2.5–14 × 1.6–5 cm.; petiole 2–16 cm., it and the rhachis ± white-pilose; sheaths narrowly oblong, striate, with yellowish- or brownish-membranous, often ciliate margins, 1–2 cm.; white, bristly hairs present especially below the insertion of, and on the stalks of the pinnae, and on the ± recurved margins and midrib of the lower surface of the leaflets, rarely subglabrous; upper leaves somewhat shorter and more shortly petiolate or sessile.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Umbels with often very long peduncles, 3–40 cm., densely deflexed-setose below the umbel, more sparsely so below, with 3–9 ± angular, usually shortly pilose rays 2–3(–7) mm. long; involucre of mostly ± 6–8 narrowly lanceolate, marginally setulose, ± 3–6 mm. bracts.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Flowers ± (4–)6–9 to each partial umbel, all hermaphrodite or more commonly at least some inner ♂, on very short, ± glabrous pedicels up to ± 2 mm. long; involucel of 6–15, narrowly lanceolate to linear, marginally setulose bracteoles subequalling the flowers.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx-teeth distinct, deltoid-lanceolate.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Petals ± 1 mm., blackish purple or rarely (not in East Africa) yellowish.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Fruit oblong-ellipsoid, 4–6 mm., the spines of the secondary ribs pale to purplish; stylopodia conical; styles short, rigid, ± divergent, subequalling the stylopodia or shorter.
